To assure individual health information is properly protected in the United States, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted in 1996. The federal law set standards for the electronic exchange, privacy and security of health information. How does this law impact on-demand video and phone interpreters?

To discuss medical records, care, treatment and billing information, individual medical interpreters (including on-demand) should complete a HIPAA training. HIPAA compliant means a training course has been completed successfully which has made the interpreter aware ethics surrounding the law and of the conditions and legal consequences of divulging a patient's medical information.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, a major goal of the privacy rule is to assure that individuals’ health information is protected while allowing use of specified data needed for providing proper health care
.

HIPAA training suited for on-demand interpreters is available online. The 90-minute course satisfies the training requirement for 2 years. HIPAA compliance, may be submitted as credentials to your ProZ.com profile.
