Personal branding: How can it help you get found, seen and hired

Discover how personal branding can help you get seen, found and hired

Branding for freelancers? Isn’t branding something for big companies, corporations, and institutions? The short answer is no.  Branding is how you present and position yourself;  it combines your image, message, tone, values, and the feeling that you want people to associate with your work.  And yes, it can absolutely influence your freelance career.

Let's start from the beginning, what is branding today?

Traditionally, branding has been defined as "the promotion of a product or service by identifying it with a particular brand," and as we said,  branding is not only for big businesses or corporations, a personal brand involves everything that shapes how others perceive you professionally.

For freelancers, it’s what makes someone say: “I know exactly who would be perfect for this job.”

True branding is the balance between what you know about your business and what others experience when they interact with you. It’s the key to showing your authentic value in a crowded marketplace.

What's in a brand for language professionals?

For freelancers, it's all about your niche.  If you target everyone, you target no one.

Finding a vertical (whether it’s legal, medical, game localization, or another specialty) makes your brand memorable and referral-friendly.

The same principle applies across the board:

  • Indigenius is known for focusing on rare languages and onsite interpreting services.

  • Larger LSPs like TransPerfect brand themselves through their ability to handle large-scale multilingual projects.

  • Alzatranz Linguistics can successfully brand themselves as the go-to expert in software localization.

Today, building a brand is even more important with the rise of AI, machine translation, and remote work. Clients seek trust, expertise, and authenticity, not just another name in a directory.

Building your brand: 2025 edition

1. Your niche and expertise. What you specialize in, and how clearly you communicate it.

2. Your voice and tone. How you sound online and in communications (friendly, formal, quirky, confident?).

3. Visual consistency. Same photo, logo (if any), fonts, colors across platforms (LinkedIn, ProZ profile, email signature).

4. Your story. Why you do what you do, and what makes your background unique.

5. Reputation and credibility. Testimonials, reviews, consistent work quality, or thought leadership (like writing or speaking).

6. Online presence. How polished and up-to-date your profiles, websites, and portfolios are.

In short: a personal brand is the intentionally shaped version of your professional self. It helps clients remember you, trust you, and choose you.

Many freelancers are using Instagram, LinkedIn, personal blogs, and even TikTok to strengthen their brand. Clients increasingly value freelancers who have a clear mission and authentic online presence.

To help freelancers understand better what brading is and how to implement all these tips, ProZ will host a ProZ/TV event called "Get found, seen, and hired: Using platform power to grow your freelance business" where Joe Lépine, Andrea Capuselli, and Florencia Vita will be talking about how to create a standout profile, connect with clients, and build a successful freelance career.
